For the Steering Committee
Why This Matters
A credit union’s growth figures tell the committee how big the organization is getting. The efficiency figures tell it whether that growth is making the credit union stronger. This analysis turns the NCUA Call Report into a quarter-by-quarter view of how well the credit union converts its two core resources, its people and its member relationships, into financial results.
01Per Employee
The per employee measures show productivity and staffing discipline. When assets, members and revenue per employee rise, the organization is getting more leverage from its team. When expense per employee climbs faster than revenue per employee, margins are being squeezed. That usually points to processes, technology or staffing models that need attention before it shows up as a budget problem.
02Per Member
The per member measures show the health of the member relationship. Rising shares and assets per member mean members are trusting the credit union with more of their financial lives. Profit per member shows whether each relationship is sustainable. A widening gap between revenue and expense per member is an early warning that growth is costing more than it returns.
Together these trends give the committee an objective, regulator-sourced baseline for strategic decisions:
- Where to invest in process improvement or automation.
- Whether staffing plans match member growth.
- Whether current initiatives are actually improving performance.
Reviewing them every quarter turns efficiency from a once-a-year budget conversation into a discipline the committee manages.
